Illusion of Space

CSOs: VA.O.3.1.2     use drawing and/or painting media to create artwork.

VA.O.3.2.6     explore the concept of composition and space as it relates to foreground, middle-ground, and background.

Lesson Objectives: Use drawing media to create art that has  a foreground, middle-ground, and background, the use of overlapping shapes to create an illusion of space, and the use of size and position to create the illusion of space.   Technology: none  Assessment:  One-on-one (formative)

Learning Activities:  The students will draw an animal, bird, reptile, vehicle, person, etc., in three different sizes – small, medium, and large.  They will glue these on a 9x12” piece of drawing paper – the smallest highest on the picture plane, the medium-sized in the middle, and the largest one overlapping the medium one and placed lowest on the picture plane.  Next they will draw the foreground, middle ground, and background – coordinating these areas with the glued shapes.  Finally, they will color these with colored pencils.  This project will take at least two class periods.
